At approximately 2 p.m., the St. George Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the Little Valley area at 2335 E. 2190 South. When the first crews arrived, they observed heavy smoke emanating from a blaze on the back patio of the two-story home. They called for more resources due to the heat and wind, Battalion Chief Robert Hooper told St. George News.

Four fire engines, one ladder truck and at least 25 firefighters worked the scene, Hooper said. Water flowed down the black asphalt, and the smell of smoke permeated the air.

However, with only flowers adorning the home’s exterior, the damage was isolated to its back, resulting in an estimated $60,000 in damages to the patio, kitchen and living room, with some smoke damage throughout.

“Due to the heat and amount of wind today, we were worried about that fire kind of getting all that extra oxygen and pushing into the attic,” Hooper added.

The occupants were able to exit the home without injury, he said, adding that firefighters rescued two pet lizards that also appeared to be unharmed. No personnel reported injuries occurring during the response.

Gas and power were turned off to avoid energizing the fire, but the homeowners will regain these services once the necessary repairs and an inspection are completed, Hooper said.

The St. George Police Department and a Gold Cross ambulance also responded to the call.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
