Southern Utah Veterans Home to Present Their First Annual Pinewood Derby Extravaganza

(Ivins, UT) The Southern Utah Veterans Home located in Ivins, UT will be hosting a wild and lively Pinewood Derby race. Scheduled for Friday, April 18 at 2:00 pm, 64 pinewood derby cars and an equal number of anxious participants will watch their cars go, hopefully fast.

Dedicated nearly a year ago, the Southern Utah Veterans Home is committed to providing short-term rehabilitation and skilled nursing services to veterans as well as their spouses. The Home sits at the base of the Red Mountain on land which was donated by Ivins City, and is the place that more than 80 of our nation’s heroes proudly call ‘home.’ This Pinewood Derby event will allow the residents of the home to rekindle cherished memories of their past.

Recreation Director, Vie Van Noy, thought a pinewood derby would bring back fond childhood memories for many of the residents. The residents expressed an interest in the idea and plans to make it happen began. When the Ivins City staff learned of this project, they eagerly volunteered to be the main sponsor. Other interested entities soon offered their unique talents to make this a memorable event for all involved. Volunteers of all ages are working together to make this event a success. Kent Cook, Ivins City employee and 30 year pinewood derby car building expert, kicked off preparations for the event and explained to the veterans his experience in making cars go fast. A championship caliber pinewood derby car is capable of speeds in excess of 200 MPH.

Area Boy Scouts are helping the veterans with detail work on the axles and wheels. Younger Cub Scouts explained to the veterans their experience in making cars go fast. The generational gap is being bridged.

Veterans’ family and friends will be in attendance to cheer the veterans on. This event is open to the public. Ivins City Mayor Chris Hart has had an instrumental role in the coordination of the youth volunteers. The director of the Southern Utah Veterans Home, Jerry Olson, has enthusiastically given his support.
