Pentecost, Rite I Services at Grace Episcopal Church

ST. GEORGE — Interim Priest The Reverend Canon Mark Clevenger has announced that Pentecost observances will be held on Saturday , May 14 at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 15 at 10:30 a.m. The service follows the Book of Common Prayer Rite II. The choir will sing on Pentecost and then break for the summer returning in September.

For Christians, Pentecost is a feast day on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit in wind and fire to the early followers of Jesus who were gathered together. Pentecost is often referred to as the Church’s birthday.

Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection, there were followers of Jesus but no movement that could be meaningfully called “the Church.”

From a historical and spiritual point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the Church started as the Spirit brought the Church into existence and continues to enliven it.

In celebration of the day, worshippers are encouraged to wear red to symbolize the gift of the Holy Spirit’s presence to the disciples in wind and fire.

Starting Sunday May 22 Grace Episcopal Church will offer Rite I, a traditional language liturgy at 8 a.m. This service using the Book of Common Prayer with Holy Eucharist will be held in the Pax et Bonum Chapel followed by an ongoing optional open discussion Adult Formation Forum at 9 a.m.

An additional service with Holy Eucharist is held at noon each Wednesday also in the chapel.

The Community Soup Kitchen lunch held at the church and under the umbrella of Switchpoint continues each weekday at 11:45 a.m. On the second and last Friday of each month members of Grace will distribute food boxes with items donated by the Utah Food Bank and supplemented by the Grace congregation. Those in need should plan to have lunch first and then get their box. The dates this month are Friday, May 13 and Friday, May 27.

Grace Episcopal Church is located at 1072 East 900 South in St George. For further information call the office Tuesday Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 435-628-1181 or go to the website.
