PAROWAN — After more than a year of extensive mechanical upgrades and remodeling the Iron County Courthouse has been re-occupied by county officials and personnel and is open for business.

The building was dedicated in 1974 and has a very good super structure but the electrical, lighting, plumbing, insulation, HVAC, and technology were all in need of upgrades. The new lighting is energy efficient LED throughout and insulation has been upgraded and added as needed to make the building more comfortable and increase the efficiency.

The remodeled building also features new energy efficient windows with a look that has really dressed up the exterior of the building. With these upgrades Iron County will realize substantial savings on their utility bills. The exterior roofline has been upgraded to a new two-tone stucco surface that has greatly enhanced the curb appeal of the building. The building is a concrete and brick structure that was literally built like a fortress. It was determined by the County Commission and building department that the prudent action going forward was to do the mechanical upgrades and remodel the building instead of a new building.

The improvements will extend the life of the building for at least 50 years. Most of the furnishings are new and the hallways will be adorned with artwork and the vestibules have comfortable furniture and decor that is inviting and comfortable for county residents. The project has come in at just over $3 million.

The Commissioners are very happy with the way the project has come together and that Iron County now has a building with state of the art mechanical, technology and lighting for a fraction of the cost of a new building.

Funding for the upgrade was from a $790,000 grant and $790,000 2.5 percent interest rate loan from the Community Impact Board (CIB). The remaining funds coming from county coffers. The architect for the project was Mesa Consulting Group and the General Contractor is Zwick Construction.

The Iron County Commission cordially invites everyone to an open house to tour the newly remodeled structure, Feb. 12 from  1-5 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The ribbon cutting ceremony along with a short program will be at 1 p.m.

The ceremony will take place in the newly remodeled court room upstairs that now doubles as the Commission Chambers. The Courthouse is located at 68 S. 100 East in Parowan.
