Husband and wife team win Kid to Kid Store of the Month Award

ST. GEORGE — This month, the Kid to Kid franchise awarded the August Store of the Month award to Dustin and Mandy Taylor, owners of the St. George Kid to Kid. Through the Store of the Month award, the franchise recognizes particular excellence demonstrated by one of its 112 locations across the United States, Canada, and Portugal. During the month of August, the St. George Kid to Kid showed an impressive sales increase for a tenured Kid to Kid store, as well as a 38 percent increase in the number of items it purchased from parents in the local community.

Kid to Kid buys and sells gently used children’s items, such as clothing, shoes, toys, books, and baby equipment, as well as maternity apparel. According to the Taylors, what their customers love most about the store is that they can purchase great items in like-new condition that are otherwise unavailable in St. George.

“There are not a lot of places to shop in St. George,” Mandy Taylor said, “so usually you have to shop online or drive to Las Vegas (to buy specialty children’s items). Many parents get these items outside of St. George, use them a few times, and then bring them to us — making our store a place where people can see and feel the items before they buy them.”

Snow boots, for example, are a great selling item at Kid to Kid, because it’s one of the few places in St. George where parents can bring their kids to actually try on the boots before they buy them.

Nine years ago, the Taylors hadn’t even considered owning a children’s store. They were looking into opening an assisted living business and came across Kid to Kid in a list of businesses for sale in the area. What attracted them most to the business, according to Dustin, was the recycle aspect — the sustainability and waste reduction were what convinced him to buy the store.

“The Deseret Industries store refers people to us for the things like baby equipment that they would throw away,” Mandy Taylor said, “so it’s nice to keep that out of the waste, and help somebody buy it who couldn’t otherwise afford it.”

On top of benefiting parents who shop and sell, the St. George Kid to Kid does a lot to serve in its community. The store gives clothes it can’t sell to the IHC Foundation, and it donates to the local YMCA and the St. George Children’s Museum each time customers choose not to take a bag with their purchase. It also donates resources to support Meals on Wheels for pets, the Parent Teacher Association, and local schools.

According to a member of Kid to Kid’s advisory board, “Dustin and Mandy are very aware of what’s happening in their community and are constantly looking for ways to be involved in areas that will make a difference.”

The Taylors attributed the success of their store to their fantastic staff, who they said are constantly willing to go above and beyond the call of duty, and to their diverse product offering.

“Even moms who typically don’t shop resale will come into our store simply because they know Kid to Kid has the best bow selection in town,” Mandy Taylor said.

They offer much more than just used clothes and have quite an impressive selection of new items including hair accessories and toys.
