ST. GEORGE — The St. Paul Catholic Center and St. George Catholic Church Driving for Charity golf tournament was held Sept. 13 at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane with tremendous success, according to a press release, thanks to the golfers, volunteers and charities involved. The charities included both churches, Solomon’s Porch and Dixie Care and Share.
The participation of 92 golfers, along with gifts, donations and sponsorships and the hard work and dedication of 24 volunteers, made the tournament an event to remember, according to the press release, and golfing at Sky Mountain Golf Course was an added bonus.
The Marine Corps League Dixie Detachment number 1270 started off the ceremonies with a color guard entrance, led by Larry Mineer, Bill Toole, Jim Summers, Billion Johnson and Steve Handy, a detachment which also assisted in the 2013 tournament ceremony. After the color guard entrance, Fr. Martin led the assembly in prayer and joked that although he does not golf, he planned to go for a ride on the course in the golf cart.
“We are so appreciative of the support the event has given to those that need assistance in lifting themselves from poverty,” said Jae Maxfield, Executive Director of Dixie Care and Share. “The funds raised will help Dixie Care and Share continue their current programs and provide new programs to help those in need.”
Reverend Jimi Kestin, of Solomon’s Porch, also golfed in the event. “This was one of the best run tournaments that I have been involved in,” Kestin said. “Attending and golfing in the event was amazing. You could feel the work of God in everyone’s heart.”
The Driving for Charity golf committee thanks their golfers, sponsors and all those that donated gifts to this event. The committee sends a special thank you the volunteers who worked tirelessly on this event. The committee, headed by Fred Hawkes and Gene Coryell, will have further updates on this event and presentations to the charities.
