The incident reportedly occurred shortly before 10:40 p.m. on state Route 130, also called the Minersville Highway, and involved a white Pontiac Grand Prix with an adult female driver and an adult female passenger.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Gary McInelly said the vehicle was traveling southbound on SR-130 at approximately 5800 North when it apparently experienced a tire separation.

“They went off the road to the left, then overcorrected and rolled the car off to the right,” McInelly told Cedar City News on Tuesday.

The vehicle came to rest upside down on the shoulder off to the west side of the roadway.

Both of the occupants sustained moderate injuries, McInelly said, adding that the women were transported by Gold Cross Ambulance to Cedar City Hospital.

“I haven’t heard since last night but it sounded like they were both doing pretty good,” McInelly said Tuesday afternoon.

McInelly said in addition to the separated tire, driver impairment is also being considered as a possible contributing factor.

“We’re still investigating the probability of DUI,” he said.

The Pontiac sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.

The incident prompted the closure of SR-130 in both directions for approximately one hour while the scene was investigated and cleared. Traffic was diverted along 5600 North and 600 East.

Those responding to the scene included multiple Utah Highway Patrol troopers, Iron County Sheriff’s deputies, Enoch City Police officers and Cedar City Fire Department crews.

This report is based on preliminary statements from law enforcement officials and may not contain the full scope of findings.
