Troopers tried to stop a vehicle in Cedar City for undisclosed reasons, Utah Highway Patrol stated in a media release, at approximately 4 a.m. The vehicle fled the city via state Route 14 into mountain terrain.

“The pursuit continued to Highway 89 in Kane County and involved officers from multiple agencies,” the Department of Public Safety press release said. “During the pursuit, tire spikes were successfully deployed on the suspect vehicle near the intersection of Highway 89 and SR-14.”

After the first set of spikes, the suspect vehicle allegedly continued south on Highway 89.

A Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputy had stepped outside of his vehicle to deploy another set of tire spikes, the department continued, when the fleeing suspect crashed into the patrol vehicle.

“The suspect vehicle crashed into the unoccupied deputy’s patrol vehicle,” the officers said. “The driver of the suspect vehicle succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash. The incident is being investigated by the Iron, Garfield, Beaver and Kane County Protocol Team.”

On Monday, Utah Highway Patrol released the name of the deceased driver as Iverson Latrell Black, 24, from Page, Arizona.

This report is based on statements from court records, police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Updated April 22, 7 p.m. to include the name of the driver who died.
