ST. GEORGE — The Snow Canyon boys and the Pine View girls each placed first at the Crimson Cliffs Invitational track and field meet on Saturday.

The Snow Canyon boys won six individual events and one relay as they finished with 152 team points, while runner-up Pine View tallied 132. On the girls side, the Panthers scored 116.5 points to runner-up Cedar’s 102.5.

“It’s exciting to see the efforts and consistency paying off for a lot of the kids,” Pine View head coach Dave Holt told St. George News afterward. “For our boys, the throws crew is really carrying the leadership. The example of our seniors, particularly Teancum Jensen and Colton Sam Fong, is spreading throughout our program.”

Jensen won both the discus and shot put in dominant fashion, with teammate Sam Fong taking second in both events.

Holt also mentioned several Pine View girls who performed well at the meet, including individual event winners Tori Conrad, Ashley Leavitt, and Jade Reimer. Holt said that they, along with the team’s distance runners, “have really set the bar high and the other girls are responding.”

“It will be a fun last month of the season to see how it plays out for all the teams in Region 9,” Holt added.

Snow Canyon head coach Justin Redfearn said he also was proud of his team’s performance at the meet.

“We had several state qualifying marks and numerous personal bests,” Redfearn said.

Among them was senior Will West, who won the 400-meter race with a state qualifying time, despite it being the first time he’d competed in that event in high school.

“Also, on the girls’ side, sophomore Amelia Nadauld running her first varsity 300 hurdles and winning in a state-qualifying 45.60 is so impressive,” Redfearn added.

Redfearn highlighted several other noteworthy performances.

“I loved the poise of our 110 hurdlers, running into a crazy headwind,” he said. “Really happy with our young sophomore Cam Hill, who is starting to figure out that he can be a fantastic hurdler as he is consistent and hard working in practice.  And ‘Big Game’ James Butterfield ran such a smart, confident race in winning the 800.”

Refearn said he can already see his athletes’ confidence building as the end of the season approaches.

“I’m so impressed with the way our athletes rally around and encourage each other as we prepare for region and state,” he added.

Saturday’s meet attracted some 500 athletes from one dozen schools. Following are selected highlights, with emphasis on top finishes by Southern Utah high school athletes:

Girls

Snow Canyon sophomore Amelia Nadauld won the 100-meter dash in 12.49 seconds. She also placed first in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.60. Pine View’s Reimer and Leavitt placed second and third in the 100 with respective times of 12.95 and 12.97. Right behind them was Desert Hills sophomore Emery Simister, who took fourth in 12.98.

Finishing second to Nadauld in the 300 hurdles was Ilenia DeHart of Dixie, who finished in 47.04.

The 100 hurdles were won by Crimson Cliffs’ Alexa Basile, who clocked a 15.38, with Pine View’s Conrad taking second in 15.46.

Snow Canyon seniors Ashlee Harris and Lilly Wittwer placed third and fourth, respectively, in both of the hurdles races.

In the 200-meter dash, Pine View’s Leavitt was the winner in 26.01, narrowly edging Simister of Desert Hills, who finished in 26.04. Coming in third in the 200 was Drew Schwartz of Desert Hills with a time of 26.18.

Pine View’s Reimer won the 400 with a time of 58.94. She was closely followed by a trio of Cedar High runners, Jaylin York (1:00.28), McKenlee Mogensen (1:00.95) and Anna Hall (1:01.58), who placed second through fourth.

Kanab sophomore Kenidee Glazier was the winner of the 800-meter run in 2:18.13, while Pine View sophomore Emmalee Williams placed second in 2:19.81. Pine View’s Kate Jones took third in 2:22.21.

Cedar sophomore Samantha Heaton won the 1600 with a time of 5:23.21, crossing the finish line 15 seconds ahead of runner-up Katie Finch of Pine View, who finished in 5:38.22. Cedar freshman Kendee Corry placed third in that same event.

In the 3200, Crimson Cliffs freshman Taylor Baldwin was the winner with a time of 12:26.66, while Brecken Heath of Pine View took second in 12:44.47.

In field events, Cedar senior Kiara Hansen won both the discus and the shot put. Hansen’s winning toss in the discus measured 128 feet, 2 inches, while runner-up Matilyn Dotson of Hurricane had a top mark of 112 feet, 9 inches. Hansen won the shot put by a distance of exactly one foot, as she had a winning mark of 40 feet, 2.5 inches, while second-place Kennedy Scott of Snow Canyon threw 39 feet, 2.5 inches, breaking her personal best by one foot.

Cedar also captured the win in the girls javelin, as Ella Fielding made a winning throw of 115 feet exactly, with Kanab senior Haylie McQuivey took second with a mark of 107 feet, 11 inches. Snow Canyon’s Ashlee Harris placed third, just as she did in both of the hurdles races.

The top two Southern Utah finishers in the long jump were Crimson Cliffs senior Mckenzie Jepson, who placed fourth with a leap of 16 feet, 10.75 inches, and Pine View’s Leavitt, who took fifth with a mark of 16 feet, 7.75 inches.

Pine View junior Tori Conrad won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

Boys 

Tyler West of Crimson Cliffs won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.09, just one-hundredth of a second ahead of teammate Easton Lott’s time of 11.10. Placing third was McKoy Smith of Cedar, who clocked at 11.17.

Cedar’s Smith was the winner of the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 22.18. Snow Canyon seniors Matt Maclennan (22.47) and Semaj Thompson (22.54), finished second and third in the 200, while Cedar’s Ammon York placed fourth with a time of 22.96.

Snow Canyon swept the top four spots in the 110 hurdles, with Thompson winning in 14.65 and Maclennan taking second in 14.71. Fellow senior Trevor Gough placed third in 15.36, while Snow Canyon sophomore Cameron Hill took fourth in 16.12.

Pine View senior Braxton Linville won the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.22. Tying for second place in that race were Jacob Johnson of North Sevier and Cedar freshman Samuel Simmons, each of whom clocked at 42.12. Simmons also took fifth in the 110 hurdles.

William West of Snow Canyon won the 400 with a time of 50.86, narrowly edging Cedar’s Ammon York, who placed second in 50.97. Dixie senior Aiddin Wilson took third in the 400.

James Butterfield of Snow Canyon won the 800 in a time of 1:59.36, with Pine View sophomores Kyle Rimmasch (2:01.48) and Carter Rimmasch (2:01.65) taking second and third, respectively. 

Desert Hills junior Logan Boyer won the 1600 in a time of 4:29.38, with Pine View senior Talmage Wright finishing second in 4:33.20 and Jack Wells of Desert Hills taking third in 4:33.74.

The 3200-meter run was won by North Sevier sophomore Cruze Hallows in 9:51.88. Pine View runners captured the next four spots, with Bridger Jaggi taking second in 9:55.51. He was followed by, in order, fellow Panthers Jaxon Bender, Trevor Prior and Jake Saari.

Pine View senior Teancum Jensen’s winning discus throw of 162 feet, 7 inches was nearly 28 feet farther than teammate Colton Sam Fong’s runner-up mark of 134 feet, 9 inches. Also finishing among the top five in discus for Pine View were fourth-place sophomore Ethan Sam Fong and fifth-place senior Franklin Seegmiller.

Jensen’s winning mark in the shot put measured 59 feet exactly, while teammates Colton Sam Fong (53-10.5) and Ethan Sam Fong (43-3.5) placed second and third. Pine View senior George Tautolo placed fourth, while senior teammate Seegmiller took sixth.

Snow Canyon had the top two placers in the javelin, with winner Joseph Smith and runner-up Austin Crosby both finishing with top marks of 162 feet, 10 inches. Smith had the edge on the tiebreaker, as his second-best throw went farther than Crosby’s.

Snow Canyon’s star hurdlers also landed three of the top four spots in the long jump. Matt Maclennan won the event with a leap of 21 feet, 11.75 inches, while Semaj Thompson (21 feet, 7 inches) placed third and Trevor Gough (21 feet, 6 inches) took fourth.

Snow Canyon senior Owen Iloa and Crimson Cliffs sophomore Eli Connelly placed a respective first and second in the high jump, with both athletes clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.

Snow Canyon also won the 4×800 relay, while Cedar won both the 4×100 and the 4×400.

Next weekend (April 19-20), Southern Utah University will host the SUU High School Invitational in Cedar City.
