ST. GEORGE — A man sustained a fatal head injury when he fell off the back of a Jeep while deer hunting Monday in Beaver Canyon, police said.
According to a written statement issued by Utah Highway Patrol, the incident, which involved a silver Jeep Wrangler, occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on state Route 153, near milepost 21.
The UHP statement said the westbound Jeep had two passengers, who were bow hunting for mule deer, standing on a homemade rack mounted on the back of the vehicle.
“A single strap/handle attached to the roll cage of the Jeep broke and one of the two men standing on the back fell off the vehicle and impacted the back of his head onto the pavement,” the statement said.
First responders attempted resuscitation efforts and a medical helicopter was dispatched and landed near the scene. However, the man, identified as Nicholas J. Demas, 28, of West Valley City, was pronounced dead at the scene and was not transported by helicopter.
