Merlin Moyes

Feb. 15, 1944 — June 16, 2018

Merlin Carl Moyes Sr., age 74, passed away June 16. He was born on Feb. 15, 1944, in Hurricane, Utah, to Joseph William Moyes and Olive Bowman. Merlin married Margaret Mary Jeffers on June 11, 1988, in Henderson, Nevada.

Merlin was born and raised in Hurricane, Utah. He went to school in Hurricane until he joined the Navy in 1962. He served a three-year term on the USS Ranger.

Following his service in the military, Merlin started working for Timet in Henderson, Nevada, and retired with them after 38 years. During this time, he met his first wife, Diane Vivienne West, and had six children. Later divorced, he was lucky to enjoy the companionship of his second wife, Carmen Richter, for a short time before she passed.

He was blessed to find his soulmate, Margaret Mary Jeffers, in 1983. She had six children also. They married June 11, 1988, joining their families together.

Merlin enjoyed fishing, collecting antiques, his garden and his animals.

He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Mary Moyes, of Pintura, Utah; his children: Irene Stanhope (Brad), Regina Weeks (Tim), Merlin Moyes Jr. (Lezlie), Justin Moyes (Andrea), Forrest James Jeffers (Alynn), Lewis R. Jeffers, Melvin Jeffers (Daphney), Edward L. Jeffers (Corinne), Berdina R. Leutbecher and Dusty Jeffers (Bryanna); 42 grandkids; 30 great-grandkids; his sisters Beth Smith, Wanda Kromrei and Vonda Morton; and his brother Joe Moyes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph William Moyes and Olive Bowman; his brothers Marvin and Earl Moyes; his sisters Billie Slack and Rose Ann Kromrei; his wife Carmen Richter; and his children Victoria and Stirling Jon Moyes, June D. Boone and Will Hendley.

Funeral services

  • Memorial services will be June 23 at 11 a.m. at the Toquerville First Ward Chapel, located at 63 N. Toquerville Blvd. in Toquerville, Utah.
  • There will be a grieving line in the relief society room from 10-11 a.m.
  • Internment will take place in Pintura, Utah, at the Gregerson Family Cemetery.
