April 24, 1924 — June 5, 2018
Josie Manell (Meinel) Kerby Hall, age 94, passed away on June 5. Born on April 24, 1924, in Douglas, Arizona, she is the daughter of Thomas Washington Kerby and Josephine Mortenson Kerby. She has lived in St. George, Utah, for over 74 years as an active, serving member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She was married to Orlo H. Hall on Jan. 23, 1944, in Hobbs, New Mexico, and they were sealed in the St. George LDS temple on Aug. 13, 1944. Both served as ordinance workers in the St. George temple for many years. They served a mission together in the Micronesia-Guam Mission. Orlo passed away on Dec. 6, 1987, from cancer.
Even as Manell’s health failed, she loved to serve. She was recognized by the LDS church as one of the top one percent of those who were involved in indexing for the church.
She has raised a large and loving family of faithful Latter-day Saints. Her incredible service to family, friends and the church and her amazing work ethic are just two of her many gifts that she taught by her example. Her hands were never idle, and she has blessed us and future generations with her beautiful handiwork.
She is survived by her children: Duane (Christine) Hall of Sandy, Utah; Joyce (Cleon) Davies of Lehi, Utah; Gary (Shaun) Hall of Washington, Utah; John (Janna) Hall of Mesa, Arizona; and Kelvin (Loretta) Hall of Canton, Georgia. Manell was blessed with not only five children but 32 grandchildren and 81 great-grandchildren. She has left a great legacy and example of enduring to the end for us all.
Manell also has two living sisters: Velma Drake of Layton, Utah, and Neva Brimhall of Mesa, Arizona.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Washington Kerby and Josephine Mortenson Kerby; her husband, Orlo H. Hall; her siblings Thomas F. Kerby, Nola May Smith, Anna Merle Taylor, Martha Leah Packard and Joseph Kerby; and two great-grandchildren: Julia Faith Hall and Alexander Matthew Hall.
In her life story, she left us with this admonition:
As I look back on my and your lives, I know that the only true happiness that lasts is by living the gospel of Jesus Christ and doing what we are asked to do. Straying from that path only brings sadness and heartache. As you go through the trials that will surely come to you, never lose sight of the goals you are working for in the eternities.
Funeral Services
- No formal funeral will be held.
- A memorial visitation and greet-the-family will be held on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to noon at Spilsbury Mortuary located at 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, Utah.
- Burial will be at the St. George Cemetery.
