ST. GEORGE — The National Weather Service Tuesday issued a red flag warning for Southern Utah due to conditions conducive to “extreme fire behavior.”
The warning will be in effect from noon Wednesday to 10 p.m Thursday in most of Washington and Kane counties and on the fringes of Garfield County.
The combination of very warm temperatures, very dry conditions and gusty winds ould create conditions that contribute to the rapid spread of fires that develop. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Southerly winds are expected to feature gusts up to 35 mph Wednesday and up to 45 mph Thursday afternoon and evening. Relative humidity is expected to be 5 to 10 percent.
“A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or are imminent,” according to a statement released by the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City. “A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.”
