CEDAR CITY – Traffic northbound on Interstate 15 was delayed for a short time Monday evening following a vehicle fire at milepost 54.
Emergency crews were dispatched at around 5:20 p.m. on several 911 calls of a pickup truck on fire just three miles south of Cedar City.
“The fire started in the engine and then spread to the front of the (pickup) truck,” Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Adam Gibbs said.
While the fire totaled the pickup, the driver was able to save his horses and the trailer they were in by separating the trailer from the vehicle and unloading the horses.
“He put the horses on the fence line,” Gibbs said.
Traffic was limited to one lane with approximately a 15-minute delay while fire crews from the Cedar City Fire Department worked to contain the fire on scene.
One of the bystanders stopped at the incident volunteered to haul the trailer and the horses to the Iron County Fairgrounds in Parowan, Gibbs said.
The pickup was towed into Cedar City.
