As promised, Utah lawmakers get free porn mag from Larry Flynt

ST. GEORGE – Making good on his promise to protest the anti-porn resolution recently passed by Utah lawmakers, Larry Flynt sent each member of the Legislature a free copy of “Hustler Magazine.”

They began arriving Monday.

The resolution, passed in March and signed by Gov. Gary Herbert in April, declares pornography “a public health crisis.”

The measure does not outlaw pornography but rather is intended to act as a warning and a place to begin discussion and education on the matter, resolution sponsor Sen. Todd Weiler, R-Woods Cross, has said.

The magazines apparently arrived at the offices and homes of Utah lawmakers in a sealed brown envelope.

Rep. Lowry Snow, R-St. George, said he received the package at his office. It now enjoys the company of other shredded materials in the trash, he said.

“It’s a stupid way to try and make a point,” Snow said. “It’s unfortunate and low class … I really didn’t think he was serious.”

Another Southern Utah representative commented on Facebook about getting the magazine.

“Luckily we had ‘warning’ (Flynt) was considering this about a month ago,” Rep. Jon Stanard said. “And today it came in the mail.”

He continued by wondering if the free magazine was a violation of Utah’s bribery and gifts laws.

(It’s) not something I ever fathomed having to deal with when I decided to run for the legislature four years ago,” Stanard said.

Snow, Stanard and practically the whole of the Utah House voted in favor of the resolution, with the exception of three representatives who were either absent or declined to vote. It was largely the same in the Utah Senate, with all but five senators voting in favor of the resolution. And again, the five other senators were either absent or declined to vote.

The Washington Times reported in April that Flynt would send free copies of Hustler’s anniversary issue to state lawmakers.

“(T)he Utah Legislature is obviously confused about what constitutes a public health crisis, so I’ll send them our latest issue and they can see for themselves that we’re no danger to the public, only to the repressed,” Flynt said in a statement, according to The Washington Times.

One legislator — Rep. Timothy Hawkes, R-Centerville — tweeted that he put the magazine in the recycle bin. Hawkes also said he hopes Flynt enjoys a free copy of the Ensign, a publication of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he sent Flynt.

Sen. Jim Dabakis, D-Salt Lake City, who didn’t vote on the resolution, joked over Twitter that the magazine was likely wasted on him. Dabakis is the only openly gay member of the Legislature.

To paraphrase VP Joe Biden: “Larry Flynt, stand up, let the people see you. Oh, God love ya, you’re in a wheelchair.”

ROFLMAO! Sorry, but I just can’t help it. I wonder just how many of these mags will find their way into secret places, where the lawmakers can peruse them at their leisure, all the while, shaking their bigoted heads and clucking their tongues. 🙂
