CEDAR CITY – Traffic traveling south on Interstate 15 at milepost 90 can expect delays for about an hour, authorities said at about 5 p.m. Friday.

Traffic about 30 miles north of Cedar City is expected to be delayed for about an hour while emergency crews clean up after a vehicle fire that started under the hood of a vehicle, UHP Trooper Clay Allred said. Traveling is currently limited to one lane on the left side.

“It’s the fast lane but it’s not fast right now,” Allred said. “We’re asking drivers to slow down and expect delays.”

The driver of a 2013 Jeep Wrangler was headed south when he heard a pop in the front of his vehicle and saw smoke coming out from underneath the hood, authorities said. The call was dispatched at around 3:45 p.m.

When he pulled over to the shoulder, he realized there was a fire. Attempts to put it out only made it worse. Flames grew bigger at that point and fully engulfed the vehicle. Fire crews were still attempting to suppress the fire an hour later, Allred said.

“I don’t know what he used but whatever it was, it made it worse,” he said.

The cause of the fire at this time is unknown.

The driver was seen by emergency medical responders but was not transported to the hospital. He reported only minor burns. The passenger refused any medical care.
