Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Darrell Cashin said the girl was hiking with her family when she decided to stay behind on an outcropping of rock and catch the setting sun.

“When she saw her family coming back, she started to run and that’s when she slipped and went down, lacerating her leg,” Cashin said, adding no bones appeared to be broken.

Washington County Search and Rescue teams were called out just after 6 p.m., as was a high-angle rescue team and a Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue ambulance squad, Cashin said. The girl was in an awkward area but the teams were finally able to get her out on a stretcher just after 8 p.m.

After treatment on the scene, the girl’s parents decided to transport her to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George for further medical care.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
