HURRICANE — Quietly and efficiently, Cedar High’s wrestlers completed an undefeated region season with a 63-6 win over Hurricane on Thursday.

“We’re hopefully ready for divisionals next week,” said Cedar coach Luke Payne. “Tonight was just a step toward that.”

The divisional tournament, which brings together Class 3A wrestlers from central and southern Utah, will be at Cedar High on Feb. 5 and 6. At stake will be eight spots in the state tournament in each weight class. The state Class 3A tournament will be at Utah Valley University in Orem on Feb. 12 and 13.

“Our younger kids really stepped up,” Payne said, praising underclassmen Dyllon Arenivar, Dustin Barrick and Nate Ellis.

Arenivar got the Redmen started when he pinned Cayman Davis with 1:29 left in the second quarter of their 106-pound match. Barrick followed with a pin of Owen Sanders with 31 seconds remaining in the first period.

Ellis recorded a 10-2 decision over Spencer Lester at 220 pounds.

Cedar’s other winners included Sandon Stokes at 120, Caleb Weaver at 126, James Wilson at 145, Clay Anderson at 160, Quaid Murray at 170, Jade Bulloch at 182, McCrae Murray at 195 and Koalman Kimber at 285.

Hurricane’s wins came at 138 pounds, where Treyson Abbott got a takedown in overtime to defeat Tyson Roundy and at 152, where Devin English downed Cole Maxedon 6-3.

Roundy opened that 138-pound match with a takedown in the first period. The two men traded takedowns and reversals and finished deadlocked at 6-6 after two periods. They were tied at 8-8 after regulation.

In the other region match of the night, Pine View and Dixie deadlocked at 42-42 but the Panthers were declared the winner on the seventh tiebreaker. That was first match points scored in each wrestler. The Panthers had a 5-3 advantage there. There were five forfeits, with Dixie giving away 24 points to Pine View’s 6.
