WASHINGTON COUNTY — A LaVerkin woman was arrested on felony child abuse charges Monday after she allegedly passed out and fell on top of her 2-year-old son while taking a shower.
Officers met with 33-year-old Crystal Jade Randall to question her about a reported traumatic incident where she had allegedly fallen on her small child “inflicting serious physical injury recklessly” and to find out what may have led up to the event, according to a probable cause statement filed by the LaVerkin Police Department in support of the arrest.
Randall told police she was in Richfield Saturday and, while there, she ingested a half of a prescription pill listed in the police report as “Advan” (though most likely was Ativan), which she told officers was not prescribed to her and that she had never taken before, according to the report. Randall said she took the pill to calm her nerves.
According to court documents, Randall told police that, on Friday, she had also taken a “Roxy pill” — formally known as Roxicodone — a narcotic pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain that may also be used to sedate patients prior to surgery, according to drugs.com. The pill works by dulling the pain perception center in the brain, and may also affect other body systems such as respiratory and circulatory systems at higher doses, according to the site.
Randall said she returned home and went into the house to take a shower with her 2-year-old son, court documents read. While in the shower, Randall told police she “passed out” and fell on top of her child.
“Crystal said she was possibly passed out for 10 minutes,” the arresting officer wrote in the statement. “Crystal said when she woke up from being passed out her son was underneath her legs. Crystal said the water was freezing cold and her 2-year-old was under her legs with his head on her legs.”
When Randall got her child out of the shower, she said he was “gasping for air” and “coughing up water,” the report read. She said she didn’t know how much water her son may have swallowed.
“Crystal said her son was purple and very cold,” the arresting officer wrote. “ … Crystal said she used a hair dryer to try to warm her son up.”
Around that time, Randall said her husband came in and asked what was going on. She said her husband then called his father, according to the report. Meanwhile, Randall told police the child “kept gasping for air” and “losing consciousness” while lying on the couch.
When Randall’s father-in-law arrived at the home, he took the child to his sister’s house because she is reportedly a nurse, according to the statement of probable cause.
“Crystal said she went back into her trailer after her son left with her father-in-law and went to sleep,” the officer wrote in the report. “The paramedics or medical personnel were never contacted by Crystal, her husband, or the father in law.”
Police learned of the incident approximately two days after it had occurred and requested medical personnel respond to the residence around 10:40 p.m. Sunday to check on the child. At the time of this publication, it is unclear how police learned of the incident.
Police requested a response by the Division of Child and Family Services, as well.
Randall was arrested and booked into the Washington County Purgatory Correctional Facility on charges of third-degree felony child abuse — inflicting serious physical injury recklessly.
Randall’s bail pending trial is set at $2,500, according to booking information. As this report is published, she remains in custody at the jail.
She made her initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon in 5th District Court.
According to Utah Court documents, Randall has no prior arrests or charges in Utah related to drugs or child abuse.
Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
