CEDAR CITY — A Cedar City bar has teamed up with Iron County Care and Share and the Red Rock Film Festival to host two separate New Year’s parties on two different days — benefiting a local charity and also offering alternative New Year’s celebrations.
Both events will be held at Toadz Bar, located at 432 N. 100 West in Cedar City, with the first being hosted on New Year’s Eve at 8 p.m. Not only will the event offer a fun way to spend the festive holiday, but a portion of the night’s proceeds will benefit the Iron County Care and Share.
This is the first time Toadz and the Iron County Care and Share have teamed up for a fundraising event, Toadz General Manager Bryce Anderson said. The event will feature a live DJ, dancing and a raffle, with prizes including Brian Head season passes, free nights in Cedar City hotels and date night packages.
“We are part of this community, too,” Anderson said. “We want to support the cause and help out any way we can.”
Proceeds from the raffle tickets, sold at $5 each, will be given to the Iron County Care and Share, Anderson said. Toadz is also planning to donate half of the door money from the event, as well.
Joe Forinash, Iron County Care and Share marketing director, said he hopes this first collaboration between Toadz and Iron County Care and Share will open the door for similar events in the future.
“It’s the first time we’ve done something like this, and it’s helping us form a partnership with a business in the community,” Forinash said. “We want the community to know we’re here and know what we do and to think of us when they think of local charities.”
The money Iron County Care and Share receives from the event will go toward the organization’s general budget, Forinash said. Because Iron County Care and Share is a nonprofit organization, every dollar the agency receives is used to assist the community.
The second New Year’s celebration, called “Sight & Sound Overload”, will take place Friday at Toadz beginning at 3 p.m. According to a press release from the Red Rock Film Festival, the event will serve as a fun alternative to typical New Year’s Eve celebrations for people who want to dance all night and avoid drunk drivers.
The event was organized by both Toadz and the Red Rock Film Festival and will feature a marathon of award-winning international films, followed by a DJ dance party.
“Sight & Sound Overload” will kick off with the film “Heemwei,” which tells the story of Luxembourg’s involvement in World War II and centers on the struggles of two young Luxembourgers as they flee from the German army, the press release said. Other films being showcased at the event include documentaries, dramatic thrillers, music videos and short feature films.
“I heard that ‘Taking My Parents to Burning Man’ is supposed to be a really good one,” Anderson said. “I hope people come out and have a good time.”
After the film portion of the celebration ends at midnight, a DJ dance party will rock Toadz until 3 a.m., at which time the festivities will come to a close.
“This is where independent film meets independent music,” Red Rock Film Festival Director Matt Marxteyn said in the press release. “With so much talent in renegade music available on the internet, it’s time to support both film and music that’s not spoon fed to us. After all, who wants to go to a dance party that sounds like someone’s regurgitated wedding?”
Tickets for “Sight & Sound Overload” are available online or can be purchased at the door. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $10 for table seating. The first 100 ticket buyers will also receive a $1 voucher toward purchasing food and drinks during the event. Attendees at both events must be 21 or older.
