Traffic Advisory: Cedar City Exit 57 ramp closure, new traffic pattern

CEDAR CITY — Drivers be advised that at 10 p.m., Saturday, Exit 57 on Interstate-15 leading onto Cross Hollows Road in Cedar City will be closed until 6 a.m. Monday.

The Utah Department of Transportation advises motorists to plan ahead for the weekend closure, according to a press release.

UDOT will close the South Cedar Interchange while construction crews install signals, signing, striping and concrete necessary to successfully change a driving configuration under I-15 on Cross Hollows Road into a diverging diamond pattern. An example of how a diverging diamond  interchange looks and functions is provided in the video below.

“The new layout is designed to accommodate future traffic volumes and to improve safety,” the release stated. “Workers anticipate reopening the interchange Monday at 6 a.m. and will also be monitoring traffic signal timing.”

Exit 59 onto 200 North is recommended as an alternate route during the closure. Drivers should also anticipate increased congestion on 600 South and Sage Drive during the interchange closure.

For business access, drivers can take the intersection of Cross Hollows Road and 200 North as an alternative route.

By Monday, motorists entering I-15 southbound from Main Street will cross under the I-15 using Cross Hollows Road and connect to a new on-ramp while the old flyover on-ramp will no longer access the interstate.

Construction and some lane restrictions will continue on Cross Hollows Road through early October.

“The $10.5 million project takes advantage of the existing structure over I-15 and also includes safer pedestrian passage,” UDOT stated in its release.

Drivers interested in navigating the new interchange prior to the pattern change are encouraged to visit the videos accessible from the project website.
