Pedestrian struck by trailer on I-15

SNOWFIELD – Early Monday morning, Utah Highway Patrol troopers and Washington County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a man walking on Interstate 15. When officers arrived, they found Walter Bornnard, 66, of California, lying in the travel lane, having been hit by a trailer.

“We received a call a little before 5 a.m. of a pedestrian walking in the northbound travel lane,” UHP Lt. Shawn Hinton said. “Troopers and deputies initially could not find him, so they began a foot search.”

During the foot search, a semitruck driver stopped and alerted officers that Bornnard was walking near Exit 33, the Snowfield exit.

“Deputies and troopers then looked up the freeway and began seeing vehicles swerving,” Hinton said. “They didn’t see anyone get hit but the vehicles were swerving in a particular area.”

As officers approached the area, a man driving a pickup truck with a trailer made contact with them and informed them he believed he had hit someone with his trailer.

When officers reached the area, they found Bornnard lying in the travel lane.

“It was a side-glance hit by the trailer,” Hinton said. “He broke both of his legs. He is currently in serious condition but is expected to survive.”

Hinton said UHP is still investigating why Bornnard was on I-15.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Snowfield is a very obscure place name that most readers won’t be familiar with. How about near exit 33 or bottom of The Black Ridge?
