Game Preview Capsule: Sequoia (3-0) at Cedar (2-3)

GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Sequoia, Calif. (3-0) at Cedar (2-3, 1-1)
Previous Meeting: This the first meeting between the schools
Broadcast: KSUB Radio 590 AM and online

CHEROKEES
imagesClassification: California CCA Power League
Coach: Coach Poulos (4th year, 18-15 overall)
Offense: Spread option
Last game: Beat Woodside 44-26
Players to watch: This team can score points and the Cherokees do it mostly by running over, around and through teams. QB Cameron Greenough has 262 rushing yards and 469 total yards through three games, averaging 12 yards a carry. Meanwhile, sophomore running back Faavae Brown is also impressive, have racked up 394 yards (131 a game). Big-play WR Ben Sehl is averaging 36 yards per catch.
PPG: 42.0
PAPG: 18.0
Trend: Sequoia is trying to become a power in the Bay Area and has some big-time athletes. The Cherokees would rather outscore you than play a lot of defense. But they do run the ball extremely well.

REDMEN
cedar-smClassification: 3AA, South Region
Coach: Todd Peacock (27th year, 156-128-1 overall)
Offense: Triple option
Last game: Beat Hurricane 6-0
Players to watch: K Jeff Rogers was the only player to score for either team in last week’s 6-0 win. Cedar had just 200 yards of offense last week, but only allowed 171 behind a stout D led by Dusty Hone and Ty Bulloch. RB Bubba Allred made a big splash last week with a 53-yard run.
PPG: 19.0
PAPG: 17.2
Trend: One thing the Redmen do well is come atcha. In other words, the plucky Redmen are relentless and that paid off in their first region win. Peacock is still trying to figure out whether Austin Obering or Brecken Lewis will lead this team at QB, but the truth is the defense will keep them in most games, especially if they can limit turnovers.

GAME OUTLOOK
So, this is the most perplexing match-up of the week. Will the Redmen, who are clearly playing up against this Bay Area team, have enough chutzpah to hang in this game against superior athletes? Cedar’s defense is tough, but the offense has been inconsistent at best. So, Cedar better hold Sequoia’s offense down and limit big plays.

STGnews (record) PREDICTION
Andy Griffin (24-4) — Sequoia
Darren Cole (19-9) — Sequoia
