HURRICANE – A storm and considerable amount of accompanying rainfall caused flooding concerns in Hurricane on Wednesday.

Flooding in the Angell Heights Estates neighborhood, located at 2050 South 160 West, was first reported at approximately 10 a.m. Natural waterfalls in the cliffs above the residential area caused a large amount of water and debris to travel down 2050 South, threatening homes.

Angell Heights resident September Smith, who could see the waterfalls from her home, said that one of the neighborhood’s access routes was blocked and a drainage culvert located on 2050 South was flooding heavily around 10:45 a.m.

Hurricane City Public Works crews and the Hurricane Valley Fire District responded to remove the debris and divert the water around 11 a.m. Youth volunteers from Hurricane High School, along with police officers, firefighters and citizens, helped fill and stack sandbags around vulnerable homes. Around 1:30 p.m., city officials closed all of 2050 South.

Shortly after, flooding in one garage and foot-high water levels on the exterior of another house was reported. The extent of damage to these homes has not yet been determined, and concerns remain for the entire neighborhood. Public works is on scene to monitor the progress of containment and divergence efforts.

Additionally, wash flooding caused the closure of Old Highway 91 near Harrisburg and 1150 West in Hurricane. Standing water remains in many roads in the Hurricane area, and drivers are encouraged to travel at speeds appropriate for the road conditions and be vigilant.

No other residences or businesses have reported flooding, aside from Angell Heights Estates.

“(This is the) area with the most substantial impact,” Hurricane City Police Department Sgt. Brandon Buell said.
