St. George, Utah—The Bureau of Land Managemen Utah St. George Field Office is temporarily closing the Red Cliffs Recreation Area campground and day-use area until flood damages from Saturday’s storm are repaired.

Late in the afternoon on July 20, a thunderstorm caused flash flooding in Quail and Leeds Creeks, both of which flow through the Red Cliffs Recreation Area.

The flooding resulted in extensive damage to the access road and other facilities as flood waters carried large boulders, tree trunks, and sediment into the area undercutting two low-water crossings on the access road, depositing mud and debris in the day-use area, and severely damaging the footbridge across Quail Creek.

BLM crews are evaluating the damage and will begin necessary repairs in the near future. The campground, day-use areas, and pedestrian access to the eastern section of the Prospector Trail will remain closed while repairs are completed. The public will be notified as soon as the area is re-opened for use.
