‘We the People’ performed by Same Difference Inclusive Theatre; abilities within disabilities

ST. GEORGE – The Same Difference Inclusive Theatre Company, featuring 18 performers from the St. George area, will proudly present “We The People: A Patriotic Musical” tonight at 7 p.m. and Saturday at both 2 and 7 p.m. at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church* in St. George.  The venue is accessible, and admission is by donation.

“We the People” is a musical by Pat Cook, with Music and Lyrics by Bill Francouer.

Same Difference productions feature performers and crew who do and do not have disabilities. Some of have a physical disability, or a genetic condition, some have a hidden disability, some have more than one disability, some were born with a disability and some acquired their disability.

“All of us have abilities,” Melissa Ann Santora said, representative of Same Difference in Utah. “We’re all able to learn and teach, to share, to dream, to love one another, to get on each other’s nerves, to stand up for what we believe in, to stay focused, to get off-task, to make mistakes, to feel stressed, to laugh, to appreciate our similarities and our differences. We’re all included, and appreciate those who include themselves as members of our audience.”

Holding true to the mission of the organization, “We the People” features performers who do and do not have disabilities, from the St. George area these are: Glenda Beckstead, Dan Case, Jerilyn Churchill, Marty Duffin, Sarah Duffin, Erika Filter, Corisa Ford, Patrick Horgan, Amber Knudsen, Michaelah Ort, Suzan Ort, Zachary Otto, Dan Phillips, Melissa Ann Santora, Jayden Shepherd, NeVaeh Shepherd, Jared VanMeter and Angie Woodmansee.

“We the People” is comprised of vignettes and musical numbers designed to remind the audience of both the history and nostalgia of America. Tribute is paid to members and Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, and inspiration is taken from the words of such notable Americans as Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Same Difference was established in Butte, Mont. in 2004, and has produced over 50 plays and musicals in Butte and Southern Utah, in addition to touring productions in more than 30 Montana cities, in Texas, New York, Nebraska, and Canada.

Same Difference’s Mission Statement is to provide critical opportunities for people who do and do not have disabilities to participate in theatre arts and service together, fostering inclusion and acceptance while providing disabilities awareness education and training.

Its Vision Statement envisions a world where people who have disabilities are recognized as competent and capable individuals who rise to the occasion when opportunities are presented, often exceeding expectations.

*Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church is located at 611 North 2450 East, in St George. The performance will be presented in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
