Editor’s Note: The Republican primary is exclusive to registered Republicans. The Democratic Party’s state convention did not result in any nominee candidate run-offs relative to Southern Utah, so there is no Democratic Party primary here this year; the party’s nominees are already chosen for the November ballot.

ST. GEORGE – Tomorrow is Utah’s primary election. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Links for finding your polling place are included at the close of this article.

Voters shall be prepared to give their residence address to the pollworkers and to present valid voter identification.

Absentee Ballot holders – mail it today or take it with you to the polls.

If you applied for an absentee or mail-in ballot and you have not yet cast it, your remaining options are:

• Cast the ballot and mail it with a postmark of today, June 25.

• Take your absentee ballot with you to your polling place and the pollworker will cancel the absentee ballot, and then allow you to cast your votes at the poll.

You will not be allowed to cast your votes on the absentee ballot and deposit it with the pollworker; you will not be allowed to vote at the poll if you applied for an absentee ballot unless you bring it with you to the polls for cancellation.

Who and what wins?

The highest number of votes determines each election of persons. Any ballot proposition passes if the number of “yes” votes is greater than the number of “no” votes; the proposition fails in the case of a tie vote or a greater number of “no” votes.

Election Results will begin posting after the polls close at 8 p.m. tomorrow.

Absentee Tallies.

Absentee ballots received by election day are counted by pollworkers at the polls.

Counties are to release on June 27 how many absentee ballots they have received.

Absentee ballots received subsequently are counted in the ensuing process.

Justin Lee, Election Specialist with the Utah Lt. Governor’s office said that although any election’s results could be too close to call in the immediate, the elections that are typically so close that results cannot be called until all absentee ballots are counted are those at the local level.

Canvassing the votes.

Each County is required to canvas and report the election results by July 10. Canvas means to look over and report the results to the Lt. Governor.

The Lt. Governor’s office will then complete its statewide canvas by July 23, and certify the election results at that time.
