SALT LAKE CITY – Representative David Clark, R-Santa Clara, announced his resignation from the Utah Legislature on Monday.
In a letter sent to the Speaker of the Utah State House, Becky Lockhart, Clark declared he would resign from office, effective Jan. 5, 2012.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today to announce my resignation,” Clark wrote. “To leave such an august body and wonderfully dedicated public servants is difficult, but I feel it is best that the people of District 74 have the necessary time to elect a new representative prior to the start of the 2012 legislative session.”
Clark previously stated he plans to run for congress. Utah law currently prohibits members of the state legislature from engaging in fundraising while the legislature is in session. Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, is considering similar action as he seeks a congressional seat.
According to a press release, “Rep. Clark will to spend time with his family and contemplate the best way to continue his service to his community and state.”
Clark was elected to represent House District 74 in 2001, and has served in the capacities of majority leader and speaker of the house in the Utah State House in 2006 and 2008 respectively.
