LAKE POWELL – Death of a woman on Lake Powell was declared on Tuesday, August 23, when her body was found approximately eight feet underwater at the back of the houseboat she and her husband had been enjoying.
The woman has been identified as Diane Ellis, 40, of Continental, Colorado. Bruce Bushore, Dispatch officer for San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, said the couple had been house boating on Lake Powell and were camping that night in Slick Horn Canyon.
Bushore said “the victim’s husband was unable to locate her Tuesday morning after awakening and called the San Juan Co Sheriff and the National Park Service.”
Glen Canyon National Recreational Area of the NPS indicated that the husband reported he had not seen her since the evening before.
Park Rangers responded to the houseboat and initiated an investigation and search for the missing woman. A short time later her body was located by NPS divers and pronounced deceased.
Park staff, in conjunction with the park concessionaire, provided logistical support to the family, according to the NPS.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigative agency with the assistance of the NPS in the ongoing investigation. Bushore said the body has been taken to the Utah Medical Examiner’s office.
