ST. GEORGE – On Friday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the public is invited to an Open House event at the Dixie Care and Share.
“The objective is to create awareness for the public at large about Dixie Care and Share,” said Rueben Garcia, the facility’s director.
Dixie Care and Share provides emergency food, shelter, and services to those who have fallen on hard times. However, to people that believe only slackers looking to get a handout frequent the Dixie and Care and Share, Garcia says they are greatly mistaken. “That’s not the case,” he said, “Most are pretty productive.”
Visitors to the open house while be able to meet facility staff, volunteers, and shelter residents. They will also learn of just how vital Dixie Care and Share has been in the community, especially for those affected by the economic turmoil. Attendees will take tours of the facility, and will also be treated to a barbeque lunch.
Dixie Care and Share relies heavily on community support and donations. People may volunteer at the facility, or make donations of food and money. At a benefit concert organized by the Southern Utah Songwriters Association last year, it was noted that a dollar donated to the facility is able to stretch up to seven times its value thanks to the overall aid from the community.
