WASHINGTON – A young boy was taken to the hospital today after being struck by a truck on the corner of 100 East and Telegraph just after 5 p.m.
Sgt. Dennis Bailey said the boy was nine or 10 years old, and received non life-threatening injuries.
Bailey said the boy was pushing his bike and looking down, and the pickup truck was turning right, but looking left for oncoming traffic. The truck accelerated into the street just as the boy stepped off the curb. The boy and his bike were hit, Bailey said, however Bailey said he believes only the bike went under the truck.
The boy was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center. No citations were issued to the driver as the accident is under investigation, Bailey said.

I am the mother of the boy who was hit. The accident was on 100 EAST. Skylar is 10. He was walking his bike across the street when the truck hit him. The driver said he just never even saw him. The guy turned when he thought it was clear because there were no cars…. So he couldn’t have been going too fast. That is probably why my son is ok. But the angle and size of the truck sucked the bike underneath, bending the frame. And my son’s leg was stuck under the bike, so he was sucked half way under the truck too. He had like 7 stitches on his leg and is bruised but sore. He got to ride in the ambulance and everything, though, so at least he has a good story to tell out of it. And he was super lucky. If he had been riding instead of walking his bike he would have been knocked off of the bike into oncoming traffic on a busy street.
We are super lucky the truck was at a stop when my son started to cross the street, walking his bicycle. With the mass of the truck bending the frame like that, and my son’s leg under it, we are lucky stitches is all he needed. Could’ve broken his leg. We are so blessed. I wish I could thank everyone who stopped to help and comfort us. So much love surrounded us.
